SEO & GEO

Local SEO and GEO: where should a small business start?

A practical starting point for local visibility and AI-powered search: clear business information, accessible pages, useful content and consistent measurement.

Local visibility connects a business, a service and a place.

The short answer

Start with accurate business information and a technically accessible website. Publish pages that answer real customer questions, then assess both visibility and qualified enquiries. SEO and GEO are useful ways to organise this work; neither guarantees a ranking or a citation.

SEO and GEO: related goals

SEO supports discovery and understanding in search engines. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, describes approaches intended to make content understandable, verifiable and usable as a source in generative search systems.

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require a separate technical optimisation or special schema. Existing SEO foundations still apply. This statement concerns Google’s products; other platforms may operate differently.

Build a reliable local foundation

Explain whom you serve, where you operate and what you provide. Keep website details and your Google Business Profile accurate and consistent. Use the real business name and maintain opening hours and service areas.

Google describes local results in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. Complete information and genuine reviews help communicate the business. Avoid producing near-identical area pages for places where you do not actually provide a service.

For example, a business in Tuzla should explain the service scope, working process and contact method instead of merely repeating the district name. This is an illustrative example, not a customer result.

Check the technical foundations

Confirm HTTPS access, a successful page response and indexability. Check that robots rules or noindex settings do not unintentionally block a public page. Use a self-referencing canonical URL, a descriptive title and a meaningful heading structure.

Give images useful alternative text and fixed dimensions. Link the article from relevant pages and include its preferred URL in the sitemap. BlogPosting structured data should describe the visible headline, author, dates and images accurately. Markup does not guarantee a special search appearance.

Write content worth using as a source

Begin with the customer’s decision, not a word-count target. Answer the main question directly, explain the scope, provide a clear example and identify the next step. Support technical claims and figures with traceable sources.

Identify the author or responsible organisation and show genuine publication and update dates. Distinguish hypothetical examples from actual customer evidence. Do not change dates merely to make an old page appear new.

Measure without overstating attribution

Compare Search Console impressions and clicks with meaningful enquiries and calls. Google’s AI search visibility is included in the general Web performance data, so a rise in total traffic alone is not proof of GEO success.

Review identifiable referrals from AI platforms where available, while recognising that referral information can be missing. Repeating a stable set of questions can support observation, but answers vary by time, location and context.

A suggested first month

Week one: record business information, existing pages and baseline measurements. Week two: prioritise broken links, mobile readability and unclear service explanations. Week three: publish one useful guide to a genuine customer question. Week four: check access, index status and enquiries, then choose the next topic.

This is a work plan, not a promised time to achieve rankings. Google does not require a special AI text file for its AI search features. No single file, content format or technique can guarantee inclusion in an answer.
